As part of a new sustainability initiative on our campuses we are introducing a new range of reusable and 100% biodegradable cups.
FX Plus Campus Experience Director Fiona Foster explained: “At the moment the campus outlets send 1.8 million take away cups to incineration every year. By introducing these 100% biodegradable cups, we are providing customers with another plastic-free alternative to help reduce the number of disposable cups used.
We are also looking to reduce the amount of single use plastics available on campus. For instance, we have already become plastic straw free and will be introducing more initiatives to support our customers in becoming more sustainable.”
The Eco to Go cups will be on sale at every catering outlet at Falmouth and Penryn campuses. They cost £4.20 (cost price to FX Plus) and when you first purchase one you will get a free, standard sized hot drink.
The cups are made from rice husks which is a bi-product of the rice industry and over 1.9billion tons a year are currently incinerated. As well as being 100% biodegradable, they are microwave and dishwasher safe.
They add to the choices already available including bringing your own hot drink container and choosing to drink in and having a china cup (the most sustainable option).
The introduction of these cups is an early action from a joint sustainability initiative, involving students and staff from Exeter and Falmouth universities, FX Plus and FXU.
Other areas being looked at include renewable energy, green travel and what we do with our campus waste.
