Penryn Campus Fitness Centre shortlisted for National Fitness Awards 4 December 2013

10 December 2013

The Fitness Centre at the Penryn Campus, that is shared and jointly managed by Falmouth University and the University of Exeter, has been shortlisted in three categories of the prestigious National Fitness Awards.

The Fitness Centre is one of six facilities named as a finalist in the Regional & Local Authority, Community Involvement and Gym Team of the Year categories, against stiff competition from hundreds of nominations nationwide.

The universities’ facility in Penryn was the most southerly nomination with a competitor in The Shetland Islands being the most northerly.

The National Fitness Awards are the biggest and best free-to-enter awards in the gym industry, and they recognise excellence, innovation and hard work.

The 2013 awards, organised by Script Media in conjunction with leading fitness magazine, WorkOut, were launched in February and there have been a record number of nominations this year. The closing date for entries was in August, six facilities were then chosen as finalists in each category, and each was then visited by one of the National Fitness Awards’ judging teams who interviewed staff, assessed equipment, quizzed members and compiled a detailed report.

National Fitness Awards event director, Judith Halkerston, said: "Visiting the shortlisted gyms really is one of the WorkOut team's favourite jobs of the year – it is inspiring to see all the great work that is going on in facilities, big and small, all over the country.

"All the shortlisted gyms have done really well already beating off stiff competition – it's been a tough task choosing just six in each category as the quality of entries just seems to get better year on year. We believe we have made the right choices though and send our congratulations to all the finalists."

Winners will be announced at a glittering ceremony on Friday 6 December 2013 at The Palace Hotel in Manchester, hosted by former TV Gladiator and fitness expert, Caroline Pearce. This event provides the fitness industry with the opportunity to celebrate the achievements of award winners and to mark the end of another year of excellence within the sector.

The Fitness Centre at the Penryn Campus is managed by Falmouth Exeter Plus, which delivers shared services to the university partners who jointly own and manage the site.

“To live and work in Cornwall is a dream, but to work within the fitness industry in the county takes that dream to another level,” explains Sport & Recreation Manager, Simon Court. “Our small team is passionate about what we do, whether we are fulfilling the specific training needs of a new client, coaching a well-trained athlete, encouraging students and staff to try new sports, installing creative new additions to our facilities such as outdoor gym equipment, or helping local teams to achieve their goals. We are delighted to have been nominated for these National Fitness Awards, which is testament to the enthusiasm, expertise and dedication of our staff.”
