Penryn Campus Fitness Centre shortlisted for prestigious awards

2 October 2015

The hard work and dedication of the team at the Penryn Campus Fitness Centre has been recognised in being shortlisted for three prestigious awards.

The Cornwall Sports Awards, which will be held on 11 November, have shortlisted two of our projects for the ‘Community Participation Project of the Year’ award.

Firstly, Flexsi, which offers students the opportunity to try new activities which may otherwise be difficult for them to experience or afford, has not only benefited the student population it has also forged important links with suppliers in the local community and has helped engage the students with the community to experience all the sporting opportunities which Cornwall has to offer.

Secondly, the Junior Gym scheme caters for members under 16 years old and provides affordable fitness to the younger members of the community. For just £2 per session young members (12-15 years) can improve their fitness levels with light resistance sessions which take place in a safe and friendly environment.

The National Fitness Awards which recognise excellence, innovation and achievement in gyms have shortlisted the Penryn Campus Fitness Centre for the ‘Gym Team of the Year’. This is the only gym in the whole of Cornwall to be shortlisted for this esteemed award, the winners will be announced at a glittering awards ceremony on 4 December at The Athena in Leicester.

The Penryn Campus Fitness Centre has also nominated one of its members for a National Fitness Award who has been shortlisted for ‘Member Achievement Award’.

Zoey Wright is a 22 year old bodybuilder who won in two categories at the Pure Elite Bodybuilding Competition. She has battled with a debilitating illness, Ulcerative Colitis (a form of Inflammatory Bowel Disease) since 2012 and in November last year after a series of intravenous drug infusions failed she made the courageous decision to have her large intestine removed meaning she has to wear an ostomy bag.

Zoey inspires others by raising awareness about her condition and showing that with true grit and determination, you can achieve anything!
