Going bananas on campus

4 October 2017

Banana trees are flowering and bearing fruit at Falmouth and Penryn Campuses.

The Japanese bananas (Musa Basjoo) are grown in the walled garden at Penryn Campus and near the allotment on Falmouth Campus and form part of the lush, sub tropical gardens.

This particular type of banana is not edible. The growth is helped by wild and mainatained bees pollinating them.

Our FX Plus grounds team and the FXU BeeSoc maintain bees at Penryn Campus. The BeeSoc keeps hives near Tremough Barton Farm and there are wild hives in an old doorway, hollow trees and old bird boxes.
